It would be a boost to the squad - Gatland─── MORGAN PIEK 07:55 Tue, 13 Jul 2021
The most experienced player in international rugby, Alun Wyn Jones, is expected to be reporting for duty with the British & Irish Lions in the coming days.
Jones was named as the original captain for the Lions tour; however, he injured his shoulder against Japan just days before their departure to South Africa.
Jones has been training with Wales for quite some time.
Gatland indicated that a final decision on Jones will be made on Tuesday.
“A few weeks ago, we did not think that it was an option," said Gatland. "He has been back fully training with Wales.
“I think he is doing a double session with them tomorrow and we will just see what the outcome is.
“He has made a remarkable recovery. The assessment was that the injury was not as bad as they first thought.
“It is a real positive and it would be a boost to the squad for someone of his experience and calibre to come back.”
Gatland did also hint at bolstering the hooker department ahead of the Test series by bringing in an additional player.
Meanwhile, the Lions face South Africa A at 20:00 on Wednesday night in Cape Town.
