Bafana stun the Black Stars─── MORGAN PIEK 08:33 Tue, 07 Sep 2021
Bafana Bafana has moved to the top of Group G in the 2020 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers following a win Ghana in Soweto.
Bafana beat the Black Stars 1-0 at Soccer City to claim their first win of the qualifiers after playing to a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Harare on Friday.
Last night the match was heading for another stalemate before Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored the winner for South Africa in the 83rd minute after collecting a low cross for Njabulo Blom.
The win saw Bafana climb to four points with Ghana in second on three points.
Following the match, the coach, Hugo Broos, expressed his delight at the improvement his team showed since they draw to Zimbabwe.
“I am very proud and happy today from what I saw on the pitch of my team. We made a big progress in one week from what I saw in Zimbabwe.
“What I saw today was a team with confidence who played a very good game. There was determination, there was a will to win, there was discipline and that is what I like.
“We will see if we can go on like this and make progress like we did in this week and we will see where we’ll finish at the end of the qualifying race.”
On Tuesday afternoon Ethiopia will host Zimbabwe in the other Group G qualifier.
