Eric Reginald Oliver was an institution at Griquas rugby and in Kimberley, and was well known for leading the team onto the field with his flag during home games.

Recently Oom Bushy underwent surgery after breaking his hip during a fall.

Griquas rugby confirmed the sad news on Wednesday morning in a social media post.

"It is with deepest sadness that we are sharing that our dearest friend and biggest supporter, Uncle Bushy passed away.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

"He will be dearly missed.

"Oom Bushy, you will forever be in our hearts."

Oom Bushy was also well known as a boxing coach, with his most famous boxer being the legendary former WBA Junior Middleweight title contender, Charlie Weir, who passed away from cancer at the age of 35 in 1992.
