The Tafel Lager Griquas are off the mark in the Currie Cup following a well-earned 41-20 win over their bitter-rivals, the Pumas.

The Griquas inside centre, Zander du Plessis, scored 24 of his team's points in Kimberley, while Alandré van Rooyen and Munier Hartzenberg each crossed the white-wash.

Du Plessis managed to slot a total of eight penalties on the day to keep the game out of reach of their opponents.

The Peacock Blues were also awarded a penalty try.

Corné Fourie, Jade Stighling, and Simon Raw all scored tries for the Pumas.

The Pumas discipline left a lot to be desired as they earned four yellow cards in the game. Two of them belonged to the flanker, Daniel Maartens, which automatically became a red card.

Griquas captain, Ruan Steenkamp, lauded his team for their effort.

“The first encounters in the Currie Cup were tough. We are a new team and we are still working on things, and it came together today. We need to carry on building on that.

“As always, the Pumas is a hard team to play against and they are physical.

“I'm proud of how the boys stuck out for 80 minutes and fought until the end.

“Well done to the Griquas boys.”

The Griqua's next game in the Currie Cup is on 18 February against Western Province in Kimberley.

Scorers:

Griquas: Tries - Penalty try, Alandré van Rooyen, Munier Hartzenberg Pen. - Zander du Plessis 8.

Pumas: Tries - Corné Fourie, Jade Stighling, Simon Raw Conv. - Eddie Fouché Pen. - Tinus de Beer.
