While Wits bullied the Shimlas in the first half to lead 37-10 at half time, the team from Bloemfontein blew numerous opportunities.

The Shimlas lineout in particular were non-functioning, while their discipline will leave much to be desired.

The win was an historic one for Wits as it was the first-time ever, they have managed to beat the men in royal blue jersey.

The Shimlas eighth-man, Ruwald van der Merwe, told OFM Sport that they will bounce back.

“It was tough luck, we really let ourselves down”, said the big ball carrier.

“It was just one of those nights where nothing felt as if it was going our way.

“Wits really came with all guns blazing in that first half, and that we were immediately put on the backfoot.

“From there it was a case of survival for us. We never gave up, but it’s a bit late to start chasing a difficult game in the second half.

“But we learnt and we bounce back. Watch this space.”

While the defeat was a major set back for the Shimlas it’s far from panic stations yet as they still lead the standings with a better points difference than the UCT Ikeys.

Shimlas have a tough block of games coming up, but they do have the advantage of playing host to the NWU Eagles, Ikeys and Tuks.

Meanwhile, in Potchefstroom the NWU Eagles beat Tuks 17-8. The Shimlas will host the Eagles in Bloemfontein next week.
