Cheetahs beat Province to remain unbeaten─── MORGAN PIEK 06:45 Thu, 17 Mar 2022
The Toyota Cheetahs remain unbeaten in the Currie Cup following a hard-fought 24-17 win over a determined Western Province in Bloemfontein last night.
Western Province led the match 3-0 at the half-time break after the Cheetahs blew numerous opportunities to score in the first 40-minutes.
In the second half, Marnus van der Merwe, Gideon van der Merwe and Reinhardt Fortuin all scored tries for the home team, while the captain, Ruan Pienaar, slotted three conversions and a penalty.
Angelo Davids and Roelof Smit scored tries for the visitors while Kade Wolhuter landed both conversions.
The Cheetahs assistant coach, Charl Strydom, told OFM Sport that they are set up nicely for the remainder of the competition.
“It the second round it is going to be week after week, so we would love to keep our momentum going.
“We've had a nice start. There are a couple of tough games that we played and we managed to get a win in those.
“That gives us confidence, especially after a performance like tonight where we were really rubbish, but we still got the win.
“It's really nice for the team and their confidence going forward.”
Following another stellar performance, the two-time World Cup-winner, Frans Steyn, was named as the man of the match.
The win did come at a big price for the Cheetahs and the Springbok winger and Blitzboks stalwart, Rosko Specman, limped off the park after being knockout out cold by Davids when he attempted to tackle his opponent.
At this stage, it is unclear if Specman sustained a concussion during the collision. Specman had been on mere minutes after coming on as substitution following his return to the team after an injury.
Meanwhile, in Kimberley the Tafel Lager Griquas thumped the Lions 49-17.
