Steyn, who earned back-to-back man of the match performances in the Currie Cup, had a rare off-night on Friday during the Cheetahs hard-fought 35-26 win over the Lions in Johannesburg.

Steyn who is normally deadly accurate with the boot, kicked two penalties over the dead-ball line in the game and this denied the Cheetahs good attacking platforms.

There was also a few moments where the player showed his class in the match.

Fourie said there that there is no need to worry about Steyn’s form and Steyn hadn’t been able to really train with the team before the match as he was at the Springboks' alignment camp.

“Everyone gets his off night, and tonight (Friday night) was definitely his," said Fourie.

“He is a class player and he will bounce back. He made a few mistakes and a few wrong decisions, especially on attack.

“He definitely was with the Springboks at the alignment camp and he only joined us late last night (Thursday night), so he couldn't train with us for the whole week. Not that it's an excuse, but it's always difficult.

“Against Western Province it was the same thing. He was attending the alignment camp and only joined us the night before the game.

“It's difficult for those guys to switch off from the Springboks or switch on at the Cheetahs again in a short space of time.

“He is quality. He will definitely bounce back and take tonight’s performance personally.”

On Sunday there were reports suggesting that the 34-year-old Steyn could bid farewell to the Cheetahs at the end of the season in order to go and play in Japan.

On Saturday at 14:30,  the Cheetahs will host the Sharks in Bloemfontein.
