Van Wyk ready to tackle former US teammates─── MORGAN PIEK 13:23 Fri, 14 Oct 2022
The Toyota Cheetahs tighthead prop, Hencus van Wyk, looks forward to facing some of his former teammates on Friday evening in Bloemfontein in the Toyota Challenge clash against the USA Falcons.
Van Wyk enjoyed a short stint in the USA where he played for the San Diego Legion before heading back to the Cheetahs.
He is one of two Cheetahs that played in the USA with the other being tonight’s starting hooker, Marko Janse van Rensburg, who in turn played from Rugby ATL.
Van Wyk told OFM Sport that it will be great to face his former teammates.
“It's quite lekker to be able to play against your old teammates, said the mobile prop who was denied a try against the Bulls XV.
“Just a couple of months ago we were all still playing together, now we're going to be playing against each other.
“It's Nate Augspurger and Nathan Silvia that played with me in San Diego - it's going to be lekker to play against them and then afterwards enjoy a couple of beers.”
Janse van Rensburg in his turn played with Ryan Rees, Viliami Helu, Duncan van Schalkwyk and Chance Wengelewski in Atlanta.
Janse van Rensburg told OFM Sport to make his run-on debut against his former teammates is special.
“Yes, I’m definitely super excited to make my starting debut against some old friends and 'foes' and looking forward to a great challenge.
“My old coach Steve Brett is also on their coaching staff as the attack coach. So, I know he would have work hard on their attack and skill. It's going to be interesting to see what they bring to the table.”
Friday night’s game between the Cheetahs and the USA Falcons at the Toyota Stadium kicks off at 18:00.
