Cancer forces Adriaanse to call it a day─── MORGAN PIEK 15:20 Tue, 08 Nov 2022
The former Toyota Cheetahs and Griquas prop, Lourens Adriaanse, has called time on his career at the age of 34 years.
Adriaanse was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer two months ago, hence his decision to call an end to his rugby career, which has seen him play locally as well as abroad.
The former Springbok was plying his trade at the Sharks until recently and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.
An emotional Adriaanse confirmed on the Sharks' social media pages that he is calling it a day and his chemotherapy is going well.
"I've decided that I'm going to stop playing rugby professionally. It has been a difficult decision, but it's for me to take time and really put things into perspective for me and my family," said the front-rower.
"I've had a good career and I would like to thank the Sharks for their support in this process.
"To everybody who has supported me in my career, I'd like to thank you.
"I'm leaving something behind that I really love, and to stop playing now is difficult.
"There will come a time for everyone in rugby when you will have to stop, and the next chapter is more important than what you've done.
"I've been responding quite well to my treatment and I believe I'm going to heal perfectly and have a good life going forward."
Adriaanse plans to do his articles in accounting at Stellenbosch University next year as he plans his next chapter.
Adriaanse played in 37 games for the Griquas and 30 for the Cheetahs, from 2011 to 2013. He represented the Sharks in 95 matches across all competitions. He played in 89 games for Pau in France, while he made his Test debut against the French in Paris on 23 November 2013.
