After a successive day starting with a victorious quarter-final against Samoa, followed by another victory in their semi-final against New Zealand, the Springbok Sevens soared through their final Dubai Sevens game against Ireland.

An impressive 21-5 win proves that the commentators were spot on in saying, “nobody does it in the desert like the South Africans do it.”

Shilton van Wyk impressively opened the game scoring a try in the first minute which was followed by a conversion by Ricardo Duartee who had an excellent sevens debut in Dubai. Van Wyk secured a second try in which Duartee was instrumental in setting up and Siviwe Soyizwapi went in to secure a third try at half time leading the team to a 21-0 lead.

Their first half proved successive with their strong lead at half time. The start of the second half saw the Blitzboks effectively holding off the fight back from the Irish. Strength in defence was crucial in securing and maintaining their strong lead which ultimately led to their victory.

Ireland’s Jack Kelly secured a late try for the Irish but unfortunately for them it barely put a dent in the Springbok Sevens victory as they kept their composure throughout the game.

In what was a first series win for coach Sandile Ngcobo, the South Africans return home confident and ready for their home tournament next week as they have their eyes on another win.

The HSBC Cape Town Sevens is set to take place from the 9th to the 11th of December at the Cape Town Stadium.
