Griquas braced for Sharks challenge─── MORGAN PIEK 07:49 Thu, 16 Mar 2023
The Griquas are braced for the challenge that lies ahead on Sunday when they welcome the Sharks to Kimberley in round two of the Currie Cup.
The Peacock Blues will target their first win of the tournament, while the Sharks, for their part, want to build on the momentum from their 32-16 win against the Griffons in Durban.
While the Griquas lost 42-19 to the Cheetahs, they are confident ahead of this week’s game and they are well aware of their good record against the Sharks, both in Kimberley and Durban.
Recently, the Griquas hosted the Sharks in a Currie Cup warm-up game, which they comfortably won 28-7.
The Griquas hooker, Gustav du Rand, who scored a try last week, told OFM Sport that they look forward to the game and for him it will be a somewhat personal affair.
"I've been through one Currie Cup campaign with the Griquas and I learned a lot during last year's season," said the hooker.
"The Sharks were here for a warm-up game a couple of weeks ago and I chatted to some of their players after the match – they didn't enjoy it because of the heat and it's dry, and it's just not nice to be here.
"For me, it's a personal game as I come from Durban, and it's going to be an excellent test to play against some of the guys that I know from there.
"I think that we are going to be well prepared for the game."
The Griquas will be without the services of the centre, Sango Xamlashe, who is struggling with an ankle niggle, while the tighthead prop, Janu Botha, will miss out due to a concussion.
Pieter Bergh will name his team for the game against the Sharks on Friday.
Sunday’s game in Kimberley kicks off at 16:00.
