The Pumas claimed a 45-25 bonus point win over the Griffons in their round 9 Currie Cup game in Mbombela on Saturday afternoon 6 May. The reigning champions currently place 2nd on the log with 34 points, 2 points shy of the Cheetahs.
Dominating the game from the get-go, the Pumas opened the scoreboard with 8 minutes on the clock. André Fouché dotted down first and was quickly followed by a Griffons comeback from HP van Schoor.
In what seemed to be a back-and-forth wrestle, the Pumas scored in the 16th minute via Kwanda Dimaza only to be followed by another dotting down from the Griffons two minutes later. Marquit September scored the try and Duren Hoffman finished off with the conversion bringing the score to a 12-10 lead to the Griffons.
All small play from the home side was put to rest as the Pumas came back guns blazing hereafter. Three more tries and conversions respectively in the last 20 minutes of the first half gave the reigning champions a strong 31-12 lead as half-time approached.
Jaywinn Juries opened the second-half scoreboard with a penalty goal for the Griffons taking the score to 31-15. Quickly thereafter, the home side dotted down twice, both converted by Brandon Thomson securing the bonus point 45 to the Pumas. Hooker Llewellyn Classen scored in the 49th minute followed by scrum half, Wian van Niekerk in the 52nd minute.
The visiting side also managed to secure a bonus point as they touched down with their 3rd and 4th tries close to the end of the game. Scrumhalf Jaywinn Juries dotted down in the corner in the 69th minute, while winger Domenic Smit scored the 4th and bonus point securing a try in the 74th minute.
Today’s win sees the Pumas retaining their second position standing on the log with the Griffons currently struggling at the bottom of the table.
