The Toyota Cheetahs loosehead prop, Schalk Ferreira, has become the latest player to extend his contract with the franchise.

The player who was recently in the headlines for saving a family in distress during the morning rush hour traffic will extend his stay by at least a year.

14-years ago Ferreira was told by doctors that he would never play rugby again after a serious neck injury.

Ferreira, who will turn 40-years-old in February, told OFM Sport that he is just enjoying the second chance he was given.

“I think in life you've got to appreciate it,” said the veteran front-rower.

“You've just got to have a look at all the blessings in your own life. I feel it's a second chance every time I walk onto that pitch and it's a blessing. That is the way I see it.

“If I have to back my own strengths, it will be that I've got a good work ethic and that's been keeping me on the pitch. I think that I am a good fit for the Cheetahs and I really like being with the team.”

On Saturday at 13:00 the Cheetahs will tackle the Lions at the Toyota Stadium in the Currie Cup.

Meanwhile the Cheetahs will face the Lions in Bloemfontein on Saturday during round ten of the Currie Cup.

While the Lions lost 25-21 to the Griquas in Kimberley last week, it was certainly not the strongest side the team from Johannesburg could field. It is expected that the Lions will bolster their squad this week with more URC players and they will no doubt be a tough unit to crack.

One thing the Cheetahs know is that the Lions will test them thoroughly in the setpiece and Ferreira said they are ready and eager to embrace the challenge.

“It's a massive challenger for us and we take a lot of pride in all of our setpieces, so that's going to be the scrums and lineouts. It's going to be massive. We expect them to put on their best team, and we want to play against their best team.

“We know that for us that there is no such thing as an easy game from now until the end of the Currie Cup.”

Saturday’s game at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein will kick-off at 13:00.
