The Toyota Cheetahs centre, David Brits, is the latest player that will be bidding farewell to the team and the end of the season.

The 26-year-old Brits will be heading back to Stellenbosch where he will be linking up with the Springbok Sevens.

Brits is a former Maties captain and he played for the side in the Varsity Cup before he joined the Cheetahs in 2021.

The plan for Brits is to use him in the same role that Ruhan Nel played at the Blitzboks before he linked up with the Stormers.

The Blitzboks have also put an offer on the table for the current Griquas winger, Rosko Specman. Specman is a stalwart of SA Sevens rugby, but has since also played for the Cheetahs before moving to Kimberley.

In an interview with BokSquad, the SA Rugby Sevens High-performance Manager Marius Schoeman confirmed that they signed the exciting centre from the Cheetahs, as well as given Speck Magic and offer.

"We have signed Cheetahs centre David Brits, who doesn't shy away from contact and will give us the physical presence we lost when Ruhan Nel and Dylan Sage left us,” said Schoeman.

“We have an agreement with Western Province to make use of utility back Tristan Leyds, and have made Rosko Specman, who is currently at Griquas, an offer to return to the sevens setup. He would bring massive energy to the team.”

The Cheetahs have already contracted the exciting centre, Ali Mgijima, from the Pumas. Mgijima who has previously played in 38 games for the Free State has plied his trade in Nelspruit for the past three seasons with the reigning Currie Cup champions.

Other players that are leaving the Cheetahs at this stage are George Cronjé and Siya Masuku. Both will be heading to Durban to link up with the Sharks.

Meanwhile, on Saturday the Cheetahs will host the Griquas in Bloemfontein in an important Currie Cup derby for both teams. The Cheetahs can book their place in the semi-finals if they manage to collect a full-house of five points, while the Griquas will need a win to remain in the hunt.

Saturday’s match at the Toyota Stadium kicks off at 13:30.
