The Toyota Cheetahs are sweating over the fitness of the two props Hencus van Wyk and Schalk Ferreira ahead of Saturday’s Currie Cup final against the Pumas in Bloemfontein.

Both Van Wyk and Ferreira, who has been very instrumental throughout the campaign, were carted off the field with head injuries and there are serious doubts that they will be able to play in the final.

Unfortunately for the Cheetahs, the Namibian international tighthead Aranos Coetzee is still nursing a quad injury and he is a no-go for the final.

To make matters more challenging for the Cheetahs, the Lions-bound Beertjie van Vuuren has been punished heavily in the games he has played since his return and he received a yellow card in the 9th minute of the semi-final for cynical play.

The is no doubt about Van Vuuren’s ability, however, his discipline will need to be addressed.

The Cheetahs coach, Hawies Fourie, told OFM Sport that the injuries to Ferreira and Van Wyk are a big concern, but he is confident that Mox Mxoli and Laurence Victor can make the step-up if they are called upon.

“It's a big concern for us,” said Fourie.

“I spoke to Schalk and Hencus after the game and they will obviously have to go for and pass the HIA (head injury assessment) tests and we will see how it goes during the week.

“Luckily Mox Mxoli has had some game time and played well last week. His head is in a good space and he will be ready.

“Laurence Victor has also recovered from his flu earlier in the week, so we'll be able to use them if necessary. Hopefully, we'll get Schalla and Hencus back on the field for the final.”

The final between the Cheetahs and the Pumas at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein is set to kick off at 16:00 on Saturday afternoon.
