Van der Merwe tuning in mentally for the Currie Cup final─── MORGAN PIEK 07:59 Tue, 20 Jun 2023
The Toyota Cheetahs flanker, Gideon van der Merwe is locked and loaded to play in the Currie Cup final for the first time in his career after coming so close last year.
The blindside flanker injured his ACL last year during the captain’s run on the morning of the fateful semi-final against the Pumas last year, and he spent a considerable time on the sidelines.
The Pumas stunned the Cheetahs with a last-ditch 38-35 win at the Toyota Stadium to reach the final for the first time. A week later they beat the more fancied Griquas in Kimberley to win the coveted title for the first time in the union’s history.
There is a huge buzz in the Cheetahs camp leading into the match against the defending champions and they are expecting nothing less than a tough battle.
Van der Merwe told OFM Sport that at this stage of the season mental toughness will be important and for him it’s important to have his head in the right space, especially after overcoming his long-term injury.
“I don't think that it's quite set in yet,” said the strong fetcher.
“I am very excited and the nerves are starting to creep in. But first things first - we need to get through this week and get the preparations right.
“We know what the Pumas will bring - they're a good team and they showed it against the Sharks. They have a lot of grit and they are willing to do anything to defend their line.
“It will take a lot from us to beat them, and from my side I'm just getting myself ready mentally for what will be a big fight.”
Saturday’s big final at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein kicks off at 16:00.
