Nienaber confident in Willliams─── MORGAN PIEK 15:12 Wed, 26 Jul 2023
The Springboks coach, Jacques Nienaber, is confident that the new starting halfback combination will be able to do the job on Saturday when they face Argentina in Johannesburg.
The Springboks opted to start with Manie Libbok at flyhalf and Grant Williams at scrumhalf for the Rugby Championship Test.
Libbok and Williams have just eight Tests between them, however, they are both strong contenders for the Rugby World Cup later in the year.
Nienaber said Williams has proven himself and he is confident that the inexperienced halfback will be up to the task.
“We're fortunate to have five quality scrumhalves, but with Grant, in the three games he came off the bench and it's not just those games,” said Nienaber who will be the coach in South Africa for one last time.
“When he was fourth or fifth in the pecking order when the other guys were fit, there was the way he trained and the form he displayed for his franchise.
“It wasn't just about how he did in those games it's been about what he's done since he's been in the mix with us.
“He's always been the guy who has given it his all and he probably deserves the opportunity. He's definitely put up his hand.”
Saturday’s Test at Ellis Park will kick-off at 17:05.
