“I must say that I think managing and leading with the boys we have in our team won't be task that is too difficult. We're really excited and looking forward to the game.”

The lock, Carl Wegener, is set to captain the Toyota Cheetahs on Friday night in the SA Cup opening game against the Boland Cavaliers in Bloemfontein.

In the absence of Victor Sekekete, Wegner will take the reins for the game while it is expected that the former could be back from the Ospreys in Wales next week.

Wegner is no stranger to the captaincy after taking charge of the team during one of his previous stints at the Free State.

The ever-smiling second-rower from Ficksburg told OFM Sport that he looks forward to the challenge.

“I must say that I'm very excited for the game on the weekend, said Wegner.

“There is a lot of potential in our team and there are a lot of young guys coming through, while we also have a lot of experience in their own way.

“I must say that I think managing and leading with the boys we have in our team won't be task that is too difficult.

“We're really excited and looking forward to the game.”

Wegner missed the warm-up game against the Griquas in Kimberley through injury, and the Namibian international, Chucky van der Westhuizen, was captain.

It remains to be seen what the team will look like for the game, but there are still some positions such as centre where the coaches have quite made up their minds yet.

The coach, Izak van der Westhuizen, will be naming his team on Thursday.

Friday’s game between the Cheetahs and Cavaliers at the Toyota Stadium kicks off at 18:00.
