Stunning come-back by Stormers gets them the win in Wales─── ILSE SMALBERGER 08:32 Sat, 11 May 2024
A bonus-point 44-21 victory and stunning come-back for the Stormers against the Dragons in Newport on Friday night has put the team from Cape Town within reach of a United Rugby Championship play-off spot.
The Dragons looked strong in the beginning, even thought they’ve only had three wins so far this season. They also drew first blood thanks to a try by flanker Harrison Keddie. The Stormers looked out of sorts in the first half-hour of the game, conceding penalties and showing poor overall discipline. They finally got on to the scoreboard in the 31st minute thanks to a penalty awarded, with Manie Libbok making no mistakes.
Three minutes later speedster Angelo Davids capitalised on a mistake by Reed by scoring an excellent try, giving the Stormers a lift as they went into halftime trailing by one point (11 – 10).
Two penalties for both teams at the beginning of the second half put more points on the board, but it was the hosts’ Aaron Wainwright who scored the first try in the second half. They were leading by 21 – 16 going into the final quarter and a chance for an upset.
The Stormers came back with a vengeance and continued pressure on the home side resulted in Davids’ second try. A yellow card for Dragons prop Rodrigo Martinez for repeated scrum infringements gave the Stormers the chance to take the lead and they did so with a try by Evan Roos finishing off a driving-line-out. However, it was two quick tries by Bishops alum Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu that put the nail in the coffin for the Dragons.
The Stormers’ Warrick Gelant was the Man of the Match with most carries, most metres and an overall brilliant performance.
