The Glasgow Warriors almost caused a huge upset at Loftus Versfeld, but the Bulls held on for a 40 -34 victory in a United Rugby Championship match this afternoon.

The first half belonged to the hosts even though the visitorsscored the first try courtesy of flanker Matt Fagerson, who demolished theBulls’ defence.  But a yellow card forGlasgow’s skipper Kyle Steyn, allowed the Bulls to equalise with a try byhooker Akker van der Merwe. Not even 10 minutes later, the Bulls’ flanker CameronHanekom scored another try, converted by Chris Smith, to give the Bulls a 14 –7 lead.

A penalty aside brought the points up to 17 – 10 in the 33rdminute, but just before the interval, loose forward Erligh Louw scored for thehosts to give the Bulls a comfortable 24 – 10 lead at halftime.

The Bulls came out swinging and scored within the first fiveminutes of the second half – Canan Moodie going over in the corner and ChrisSmith, as usual, not missing the posts. A rattled Glasgow gave away two penaltiesand Chris Smith happily obliged, pushing the Bulls lead to 37 – 10 after 60minutes.

But then Glasgow suddenlycame to life with skipper Kyle Steyn scoring after a few good phases. Fiveminutes later Argentinian-born winger Sebastian Cancelliere intercepted with a open field infront of him to score under the posts, shocking Bulls fans who thought the winwas in the bag.

With less than 10 minutes to go, Duncan Weir stunned both Bullsplayers and the crowd when he scored Glasgow’s bonus-point try and converted itquickly to close the gap to 37 – 31.  Thevisitors no doubt had a win in their sights, but a massive turn-over by NizaamCarr gave the Bulls the penalty, with Smith making no mistakes.

A penalty by Weir in the 80th minute wasn’t enough tosecure a win for Glasgow, but did give them valuable bonus points and theyremain on top of the points table for now.
