Lions keeps play-off chances alive with win over Cardiff─── ILSE SMALBERGER 10:17 Sun, 12 May 2024
The Lions still has a chance to reach the United Rugby Championship play-offs thanks to a convincing 34 – 13 win over Cardiff in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The Lions scored within the first 10 minutes with flanker Ruan Venter going over the line. The hosts’ next try came in the 18th minute courtesy of speedster Quan Horn, who chased after a Lions penalty kick up field and had to outsprint two forwards to dot down under the poles.
Cardiff never looked threatening in the first half, and Lions controlled most of the play to lead comfortably by 17 – 3 going into the interval.
The visitors finally scored their first try ten minutes into the second-half, with prop Corey Domachowski powering over the line. But it was too little, too late, especially with Congolese-born Emmanuel Tshituka injecting some excitement into the match with two tries in the final six minutes.
This was Cardiff’s eight league defeat in a row and a surpasses a run of seven losses in 2015.
