Soyizwapi eager to make it count in Cape Town─── MORGAN PIEK 06:52 Thu, 05 Dec 2024
The former Springbok Sevens captain, Siviwe Soyizwapi, will be eager to play his part this weekend, and a year ago, he was among the Cape Town Stadium crowd, cheering on the Blitzboks at the SVNS Cape Town tournament.
While injured, this allowed him to experience the highs and lows with fans, experiencing their joy and disappointment when the team didn’t meet expectations.
This year, Soyizwapi is back on the field after recovering from a knee operation that kept him out for most of the 2024 season. With a fresh perspective, he’s determined to inspire fans and deliver for the home crowd.
‘Once that whistle goes, you feel the crowd’s energy’
“It was great to feel the build-up from the stands as the Blitzboks’ games approached,” he said on Wednesday. “As a player, you’re often in your own zone, but once that whistle goes, you feel the crowd’s energy.”
A prolific scorer with 152 tries in 54 tournaments, Soyizwapi has transitioned to a forward role. Although this may limit his scoring opportunities, he’s focused on stepping up for injured teammates Ryan Oosthuizen and Christie Grobbelaar.
“They’re very physical players, so I need to bring that same intensity,” he explained. “I can’t replicate their style, but I can contribute by being the best version of myself.”

After his injury, Soyizwapi is grateful to be back in action. “Injury reminds you how quickly a career can end. Now, I approach every match as if it’s my last.
Playing at home again is special, and I want to channel the crowd’s passion into my game.”
“While aware of the expectations built on past successes, Soyizwapi is excited about the current squad’s potential.
‘We want to give our fans a reason to celebrate’
“This group has incredible promise. With the right effort, it can all come together at any moment,” he said.
“We want to give our fans a reason to celebrate and leave the stadium proud.”
The Blitzboks are in Pool C for the Cape Town 7’s along with Argentina and Ireland. There will be no room for mistakes as only the top team in Pool C will go through to the semi-finals. The Blitzboks will name their squad for the tournament in the Mother City on Thursday.
