The former Toyota Cheetahs loose-forward and stalwart Friedle Olivier and his family will say their final goodbyes to Bloemfontein after he extended his contract in Japan.

Earlier this year, the hard-grafting forward received an offer from the Mitsubishi Sagamihara Dynaboars in the Far East – an opportunity he simply couldn’t turn down. It was undoubtedly a big loss for the Free State, but he has made a strong impression in Japan – so much so that he’s been offered another two years in the Top League.

Olivier, who turned 33 on Tuesday, is currently back in Bloemfontein – but only to pack up and prepare for the family’s move to Japan. It’s not unfamiliar territory for the Olivier family, as before joining the Cheetahs in 2022, he pursued his rugby career in Russia.

Speaking to OFM Sport, Olivier said that although they’ve had good times in Bloem, they’re excited for the new chapter ahead, and he feels truly blessed to be able to play rugby professionally.

“I really, really enjoyed my time in Japan. It was incredible. I’m back in Bloem now, packing up the house – we’re moving soon. It’s a very exciting time for us, and we’re really looking forward to it,” said Olivier.

“From Russia to the Cheetahs, and now Japan – I’m honestly grateful for the journey. The intensity and quality of the game have only improved every step of the way.

“Look, getting older isn’t for sissies. With age comes challenges – your body takes longer to recover. But at the same time, it brings a new level of professionalism. You take better care of your body, you eat right, and you make sure to do your prehab and rehab properly.

“You learn so much as you get older. Like they always say, with grey hair comes wisdom. Rugby remains an amazing game to play, and what a privilege to call it a career.

“When I was younger, someone once told me, ‘Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.’ I took that to heart. Rugby is my passion. I do it for the love of the game.

“We are truly blessed. God has been good to us. And it’s an honour to be able to play this sport.”

Olivier joined the Cheetahs in 2023 and a year later lifted the Currie Cup trophy with the team.
