Mahlasi and Mosi return to the Cheetahs─── MORGAN PIEK 08:33 Fri, 13 Jun 2025

The Toyota Cheetahs have strengthened their squad ahead of the 2025 Currie Cup with the return of some familiar faces, while several key players have also committed their future to the team by extending their contracts.
The dynamic loose forward Mihlali Mosi is back in Bloemfontein after a stint with the Bulls, who signed him in 2022. Mosi previously made 18 appearances for the Cheetahs during the 2021–22 season, impressing enough to catch the eye of Jake White.
In addition, former University of the Free State Shimlas captain, Thabang Mahlasi, has rejoined the Cheetahs after a brief period without a contract. Mahlasi initially joined the side in 2022 but saw limited game time due to persistent injuries. He also had a short stint with the Blitzboks, which unfortunately didn’t quite work out.

Mahlasi, who captained the Cheetahs in their 2024 SA Cup match against the Pumas, told OFM Sport that he’s excited to be back and sees this as fresh motivation moving forward. “I’m quite excited about this new chapter,” said Mahlasi.
“I’ve really missed playing and being out on the field. So for me, it’s a fantastic opportunity and a privilege to be back.
“A few months ago, the Cheetahs made me an offer, and I accepted. I’ve just signed the contract. I was supposed to join the team at the end of the month, but I completed my medicals today (Thursday).
“So hopefully I can start training tomorrow or by Monday. I’m feeling very motivated, especially after such a long break.
“I’m eager to make a difference and, more importantly, to get back on the field.”
Meanwhile, Frankie dos Reis, who made his debut against the Pumas earlier this year in the SA Cup, has been rewarded with a contract. He’ll be expected to step up following the departures of Robert Hunt and Laurence Victor.

Fullback Cohen Jasper, centre Ali Mgijima, utility back Raegan Oranje, and flanker Pierre Uys have all extended their contracts, further solidifying the squad’s depth.
The Cheetahs will face the Suzuki Griquas on 4 July in Bultfontein, before hosting Georgia the following week at the Toyota Stadium. Their Currie Cup campaign officially kicks off on 28 July against the Boland Cavaliers in Wellington.
