The Springbok Sevens team are braced for a gruelling start to their season as they gear up for the Dubai Sevens in the UAE this weekend.

South Africa have been handed a tough pool featuring Argentina, Fiji and France, and will be eager to lay down an early marker as they chase a record-extending 12th title in Dubai.

Blitzboks coach and former Toyota Cheetahs winger, Philip Snyman, said the team need to hit the ground running, but he’s pleased with how their preparations have unfolded in the build-up to the season. He believes they are ready for what promises to be a demanding opener.

“I’m very happy with our preparations,” said Snyman.

“Our pre-season went well, and in our training session with Great Britain at Dubai College this week, things also clicked nicely. So yes, we’re ready.

“Our confidence is good, but this format is a different beast. It’s unlike anything you’d want for a season opener. The harsh reality is you have to be at your best in every fixture - that’s the calibre of opposition we’re up against.”

The Blitzboks face France, Fiji and Argentina in Pool A, and Snyman knows full well the kind of threats they bring - which is exactly why a strong start will be crucial.

“France are the Olympic champions and won the Series the year before us. Fiji are arguably the most iconic sevens nation on the planet. And then Argentina, who’ve dominated the Series in recent years. We honestly couldn’t have asked for a tougher start.”

Snyman added that with their home tournament - the Cape Town Sevens - kicking off next week in the Mother City, the squad are determined to carry momentum into the event.

“If we hit the ground running in Dubai and perform well, we take all that momentum into Cape Town - the tournament we all dream of playing in. But first things first: France awaits.”

The Blitzboks open their campaign against France on Saturday at 11:32, face Fiji at 14:16, and wrap up day one against Argentina at 18:34.
