Cheetahs to hit reset button during Easter break─── MORGAN PIEK 07:56 Thu, 02 Apr 2026
The Toyota Cheetahs have signed off for the Easter break after four rounds of SA Cup action that have delivered a mixed bag of results.
There was, however, plenty to smile about over the weekend. The Cheetahs produced a commanding 52–19 win over Eastern Province, and the lift in energy at training this week was clear to see.
Next up is a demanding stretch of four consecutive away matches, starting with a tricky trip to Welkom to face the Griffons.
Captain Chucky van der Westhuizen told OFM Sport that, while it’s still relatively early in the campaign, the timing of the break couldn’t be better - especially with a tough travel schedule looming.
“We can definitely see that some of the guys need a rest,” said Van der Westhuizen.
“A few of them have played full 80-minute matches in a row - someone like Tielman Nieuwoudt has had two really tough games at prop, which isn’t easy. So the break comes at the right time.

“It’s also good for the boys to spend some time with their families, especially with a tough run of away games coming up. Hopefully we make the most of this period and come back refreshed.”
The first test after the break will be against the Purple People Eaters in Welkom - a venue where the Griffons have, in recent seasons, had the edge over their more fancied neighbours.
Van der Westhuizen emphasised the importance of building on the Eastern Province win and hitting the ground running.
“Our first game after the break is going to be crucial. We need to start strongly so we can build momentum and confidence heading into those away fixtures,” he said.
“It’s never easy playing in Welkom. The Griffons are a tough side at home and they always have great crowd support. We’ll have to be at our best, stick to our processes, and make sure we execute the game plan the coaches give us.”
Head coach Frans Steyn echoed those sentiments, admitting that the Griffons have become something of a bogey side for the Cheetahs in recent years. He has urged his players to return from the break mentally sharp for what lies ahead.

“We know we have a tendency to make things difficult for ourselves in games like that, and over the past couple of years we’ve really struggled against the Griffons,” said Steyn.
“It’s something we’re very aware of.
“Hopefully we can get into the right mindset, have a clear game plan in place, and cut out the mistakes. If we can do that, we’ll give ourselves a much better chance.”
Meanwhile, exciting loosehead prop Dux Manyama is expected to be fit for next week after recovering from a concussion he suffered in the rain-affected clash against the Pumas in Bloemfontein nearly two weeks ago.
Next Saturday’s SA Cup clash between the Griffons and the Cheetahs at the Down Touch Investments Stadium in Welkom kicks off at 15:00.
