The Suzuki Griquas and the Toyota Cheetahs both had success on the road in the fifth round of the SA Cup.

In George, the Cheetahs scored four tries to beat the SWD Eagles by 26-17. The Cheetahs scored first when Carl Wegner crossed the whitewash in the 22nd minute, but seconds later the hosts went over to level the scores. The Eagles scored a converted try just before halftime to lead by 12-5 at the break.

About 20 minutes into the second half, the Eagles scored again, and it looked like the writing was on the wall for the Cheetahs, but two converted Juan Small tries put them back on the board, leading by 19-17 with seven minutes to go.  Marco Jansen van Vuuren sealed the deal for the Cheetahs in the 79th minute.

In Gqeberha, the Suzuki Griquas had a slow start against Eastern Province, leading by 14-9 at halftime. But in true Griquas fashion, the floodgates opened in the second half for a final score of 52-09.

In the weekend’s other SA Cup matches, the Griffons went down 68-36 to the Valke in Welkom, while the Boland Kavaliers thrashed Border 74-5 in Wellington. On Friday, the Pumas comfortably beat the Leopards 85-0 in Nelspruit.

SA Cup table

After the weekend’s matches, Griquas are still in top spot on the SA Cup table with five wins in five matches and on 25 points.  The defending champions, the Pumas, sit second on the log with 22 points. The SWD Eagles trail just behind in third, also on 22 points but with a smaller points difference. Meanwhile, the Cheetahs hold fourth place with 18 points.

On Friday (24/4), Eastern Province will host Border in Gqeberha, while the Leopards host the Boland Kavaliers at Olen Park in Potchefstroom.

On Saturday, (24/4), the Toyota Cheetahs take on the Valke in Kempton Park, while the Griffons travel to George to face the SWD Eagles.  Undoubtedly, the match of the weekend will be the Griquas, who will welcome the Pumas to Kimberley.
