The Toyota Cheetahs have confirmed the franchise is taking a patient and strategic approach in its search for a new chief executive officer, with the board insisting the long-term future of the union remains the top priority.

This comes after the former Cheetahs captain and lock Rory Duncan tendered his resignation earlier in the year to take up an opportunity at the Sharks in Durban.

In an update issued by the Board of Directors of Free State Cheetahs (Pty) Ltd, it was revealed the process to appoint a permanent CEO is still ongoing, with the union determined not to rush such an important decision.

Instead of making an immediate appointment, the franchise has shifted its focus towards implementing a broader strategic roadmap aimed at strengthening the organisation both on and off the field.

According to the board, the new direction is being driven by private investment and guided by a specialised leadership structure built around three key pillars — commercial growth, financial sustainability, and rugby performance.

The commercial arm will focus on enhancing the Cheetahs brand while also exploring new revenue opportunities to grow the franchise’s footprint. Financially, the strategy aims to secure long-term stability through careful capital management and sustainable planning.

At the same time, the rugby department remains central to the project, with the union committed to ensuring players and coaching staff continue receiving the support needed to compete at the highest level.

The board believes placing emphasis on this broader strategy will help create a stronger foundation for the future while the search for the ideal CEO candidate continues in the background.

The update also comes at an important time for the Bloemfontein-based side as they prepare for a massive SA Cup semi-final clash against the Pumas this weekend.

The board and management extended their support to the players and coaching staff ahead of the knockout encounter, expressing confidence in the squad’s ability to represent the famous orange jersey with pride and book a place in the SA Cup final.
