Pollard’s class remains undeniable as England test looms─── MORGAN PIEK 09:38 Thu, 25 Jun 2026
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus believes there is no reason to lose faith in veteran flyhalf Handré Pollard ahead of next week’s Nations Championship Test against England in Johannesburg.
Pollard did not feature in last week’s emphatic 80–31 victory over the Barbarians in Gqeberha after only recently returning from his United Rugby Championship final commitments with the Bulls against Leinster in Dublin. The two-time Rugby World Cup winner endured one of his quieter performances as the Bulls went down 36–7 at Croke Park.
Despite that setback, Pollard’s pedigree in the green and gold remains unquestionable. Time and again he has delivered on the biggest stage, proving to be one of South Africa’s most dependable performers when the pressure is at its greatest.

The experienced playmaker remains the most seasoned flyhalf in the current Springbok squad, with Manie Libbok and uncapped Vusi Mayo also in contention to steer the backline against England.
For now, Erasmus is keeping his selection plans close to his chest. He could even opt for a surprise by handing Kimberley-born Quan Horn another start at flyhalf after the versatile back impressed in the No.10 jersey against the Barbarians.
However, despite Pollard’s below-par outing in Dublin, Erasmus insists there is no reason to question the ability of the player who became Springbok captain No. 64 in Bloemfontein.
“It’s tough to point fingers at somebody when he plays at his franchise and you’ve worked so much with him. I myself have worked with him since 2017 and 2018,” said Erasmus.
“Some guys in some structures … the Sharks didn’t do really well this year, but when we get them here, of course we know what we have in them, and we know how they understand our game plan.
“It’s difficult to sometimes speak from franchise form, if you know what I’m saying. You don’t know the setup, the team spirit, or what happened in that week. Are the guys all in sync? Are they all happy?

“Akkers (Johan Ackermann) is such a great coach, but obviously Handré didn’t shoot the lights out. But he’s never not done it for us. He’s always been solid for us.
“It’s difficult to judge that. Obviously, a lot of people have a lot of comments about that, but we know what he can do. He’s 32, he’s not an old guy. Why would he all of a sudden play badly? Is there an injury? No, there’s not an injury.
“Maybe it’s just one of those weeks where it wasn’t great.”

With 820 points from 85 Tests, Pollard has built a remarkable Springbok legacy and remains one of the world’s most accomplished flyhalves. His experience, composure and proven ability to perform in high-pressure matches continue to make him a key figure in South Africa’s plans.
The eagerly anticipated Nations Championship clash between the Springboks and England at Ellis Park next Saturday kicks off at 17:40.
