Maart has been with the Suzuki Griquas since 2024, having joined the Peacock Blues from the Boland Cavaliers. The 30-year-old helped the Kimberley outfit to a second consecutive Currie Cup title on Saturday when they beat the Pumas 23-16 in a pulsating final at the Suzuki Stadium.

While Maart played in — and won — last year’s final against the Lions at Ellis Park, and helped lift the champagne-soaked Sir Donald Currie Cup for a second time on Saturday, the powerful winger actually has three Currie Cup titles on his CV.

His first came in 2023, when he helped Boland win the Currie Cup First Division title.

Maart is also no stranger to the URC. Last season, he represented the Stormers in a handful of matches after joining the Cape side on loan as cover for Seabelo Senatla.

This time, however, the move is a permanent one.

Maart leaves the Peacock Blues after 49 appearances for the team, during which he played his part in two Currie Cup triumphs.

The speedster relocated to Pretoria on Monday and told OFM Sport that he is excited about what lies ahead. However, while he is looking forward to his new chapter with the Bulls, Maart knows he would not have reached the heights he has without the opportunity he received in Kimberley.

“First of all, joining a union like the Bulls is a big move — they’re one of the biggest unions in South Africa, if not the biggest,” said Maart.

“So, I’m super, super excited to be here, super excited to showcase my talent and to show what I’m made of, and why they made the right choice in contracting me and giving me this opportunity.

“I know this journey will be a fruitful one, just as it was in Kimberley.”

Maart added that the Griquas provided him with the platform to showcase his talents, while the experience shaped him into a better player and, more importantly, a better person.

“Kimberley is where it all started for me, and everything that followed from there. I think Kimberley helped me grow as a player, but first of all, as a human being. By becoming a better person, I could therefore become a better rugby player.

“I was able to showcase my talent week in and week out there at Suzuki Stadium, so it was a really nice experience for me. I think Coach Pieter did an amazing job in developing me further in my career and giving me opportunity after opportunity to showcase my talent.

“I’ll forever be grateful to him for the belief he had in me.”

The winger added that winning back-to-back Currie Cup titles was something that once seemed little more than a distant dream, but has now become a reality.

“To become a two-time champion, a back-to-back Currie Cup champion, is something I never thought would happen. I never dreamt of it, but now it’s a reality, and I’m super grateful. I think all glory must go to God for that.

“I’ve been through a couple of ups and downs to get where I am now, and I can really see the growth. So, I’m super excited and thrilled to end off an era in Kimberley, and I’m excited to start my new journey in Pretoria.”

Maart could potentially cross paths with another former Griquas teammate in the URC, with centre Zane Bester set to head to Italy on loan to Zebre for the next eight months.

The Bulls host Zebre at Loftus Versfeld in the opening round of the URC, meaning there is a chance — albeit a long shot — that Maart and Bester could find themselves on opposite sides of the field in Pretoria.

For Maart, though, the focus is firmly on a fresh start.

After a few  memorable seasons in Kimberley, two Currie Cup winners medals and 49 appearances for the Peacock Blues, the next chapter of his career is about to begin in Pretoria.
