The Lions Rugby Company has paid tribute to lock Hyron Andrews following his passing while the Johannesburg-based side was on tour in France for the start of its European campaign.
Andrews, a former Sharks and Sale Sharks player, was part of the Lions squad preparing for their opening Champions Cup fixture against La Rochelle, as well as their upcoming United Rugby Championship commitments.
He tragically passed away on Friday morning from a suspected heart attack at the team hotel in La Rochelle.
His death has sent shockwaves through the rugby community, with the Lions expressing their profound sadness at losing a player who had recently become part of the organisation.
Lions Rugby Company chief executive officer Rudolf Straeuli said the news had left the club heartbroken, describing Andrews as both a talented rugby player and a valued member of the Lions family.
“We are heartbroken by the passing of Hyron. He was not only a gifted rugby player, but also a cherished member of our Lions family, having recently joined us this season,” Straeuli said.

“On behalf of Lions chairman Altmann Allers, the board and everyone associated with the club, Straeuli extended his condolences to Andrews’ wife, Maiglin, their young sons, Hendrix and Emerson, and the wider Andrews family.”
The Lions have asked that the family’s privacy be respected as they come to terms with their loss, while confirming that further details regarding an appropriate tribute to Andrews will be communicated in due course.
Despite the devastating circumstances, the Lions have confirmed they will honour Andrews by proceeding with their opening Investec Champions Cup encounter against La Rochelle on Saturday evening.

The fixture marks a significant moment for the Johannesburg outfit as they embark on their European campaign, but the occasion will now carry added emotional weight following the loss of one of their own.
Andrews’ passing will be deeply felt by his teammates, coaches and supporters, as well as those who crossed paths with him throughout his professional rugby career. The Lions have pledged to remember the lock with affection and respect as the rugby community joins his family and loved ones in mourning his untimely death.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 18:30.
