Lions honour fallen Andrews in emotional defeat against La Rochelle─── MORGAN PIEK 08:37 Sun, 18 Oct 2026
The Lions showed remarkable courage in their maiden Champions Cup outing on Saturday night, but rugby was never going to be the main agenda as they suffered a 31-14 defeat against French giants La Rochelle at Stade Marcel Deflandre.
Playing in the aftermath of lock Hyron Andrews’ tragic death on Friday, the Johannesburg side took to the field with heavy hearts, determined to honour their fallen teammate. Although they ultimately came up short, their fighting spirit was evident throughout an emotionally charged encounter.
The decision to proceed with the fixture was difficult to comprehend given the circumstances. Before kick-off, Andrews’ number five jersey was placed in front of his teammates during a moving tribute, while the emotion on their faces during the minute’s silence spoke volumes about the grief within the squad.
Une minute de silence en mémoire d’Hyron ?? Un échange de maillots entre les deux clubs, mais surtout un beau message de solidarité : toute la famille du rugby est à vos côtés, les 10bet Lions ?? ?? @beinsports_FR #InvestecChampionsCup https://t.co/dt7nFgrPHF

The La Rochelle supporters also showed tremendous respect, standing in solidarity with their visitors in a moment that transcended club loyalties.
The Lions have decided to retire the number five jersey for the remainder of the season, with Ruan Delport wearing number 24 against the French outfit.
With two United Rugby Championship matches in Scotland awaiting them over the next fortnight, the demands of professional rugby will continue despite the personal tragedy. Their loss, however, extends far beyond the result on the scoreboard.
The visitors made an impressive start, with Henco van Wyk opening the scoring in the third minute. The centre powered through three defenders to finish strongly and give the Lions an early lead.
La Rochelle gradually gained control through their formidable forward pack, with tries from close range by Tevita Ofa and Oscar Jegou turning the contest around.
The Lions lost Siba Mahashe to a yellow card for repeated team infringements but continued to compete with 14 men. Their determination was rewarded when La Rochelle hooker Pierre Bourgarit was also sent to the sin bin for a deliberate knock-down.
Morné Brandon crossed from close range to draw the visitors level, keeping their hopes of a memorable upset alive.
However, La Rochelle responded with a moment of brilliance. A perfectly weighted kick-pass found Davit Niniashvili out wide, and the winger finished to give the hosts a 19-14 half-time advantage.
The Lions continued to battle after the break, but La Rochelle’s experience at this level eventually proved decisive.
Tolu Latu extended the hosts’ lead around the hour mark, finishing off a rolling maul to put the French side in a stronger position.

The visitors still had opportunities to fight their way back. A second-half pass from Morne van den Berg towards Bronson Mills needed to stick, as the Lions would have moved within three points with around 10 minutes remaining.
There was further frustration when Batho Hlekani’s forward pass resulted in Nico Steyn’s apparent try being overturned by the television match official.
Those missed chances proved costly. The Lions had the opportunities to apply greater pressure, but lacked the composure and precision required to punish their opponents.
Fijian winger Avakuki Niusalelekitoga eventually crossed for La Rochelle’s fifth try, sealing the victory and allowing the home crowd to celebrate.
The final whistle confirmed a 31-14 defeat, but the result was always going to be secondary to the events surrounding the match.
The Lions will take valuable lessons from their European debut, although the evening will be remembered for far more than rugby.
Meanwhile, over at Loftus Versfeld the Bulls the Bulls thumps Stade Francais 56-20, while in Cape Town the Stormers hammered the Bristol Bears 49-12.
