The National Consumer Commission has issued an alert following the recall of specific batches of dry dog and cat food by RCL Foods.

In a letter to distributors and retailers, the pet food manufacturer outlined potential health hazards linked to several of its most popular brands. Elevated levels of the mycotoxin Deoxynivalenol (DON) in maize used for manufacturing the dry pet food were identified.

DON is a naturally occurring toxin produced by moulds that grow on grains such as maize. It is generally considered safe at levels below 1,000 parts per billion (equivalent to one part per million), but the batches in question exceeded this threshold.

The affected brands include various sizes of Bobtail, Catmor, Canine Cuisine, Optimizor, Ultra Pet, and Superwoof. A total of 55,352 cases produced on 26 to 29 May, 4 to 5 June, and 17 June 2025 have been flagged.

“Consumers in possession of the mentioned dry-packed foods as supplied by RCL Foods are urged to check whether these brands or what they have in their possession are part of the recall,” said National Consumer Commission spokesperson Phetho Ntaba.

“We understand that the higher level or elevated levels of DON may actually result in loss of appetite and digestive discomfort in your pet.”

Consumers are urged to check their pet food, and if it forms part of the recall, not to feed it to their pets but to return it to the point of purchase for a full refund – with or without proof of purchase.

Pet owners are urged to monitor their pet’s health. If any signs of reduced appetite, vomiting, or other digestive symptoms are observed, they should consult their veterinarian.

The commission will monitor the recall to ensure compliance with the Customer Protection Act.
