They will be joined by eight European clubs, as well as six teams from South America, three each from Asia and North and Central America and one from Oceania.

The tournament was confirmed by Fifa president Gianni Infantino and is set to begin in 2021. 

It will replace the current edition of the Club World Cup, which features seven teams from six confederations and takes place in December. 

In the past, only one African team played in the Club World Cup so adding two more is a big boost for the continent.

Despite Infantino's excitement, several European clubs have expressed their opposition to the expanded competition. 

Governing body Uefa says it is concerned that the expanded CWC could infringe upon the Champions League.

However, Infantino is optimistic that Fifa and Uefa will sort out any logistical problems.

The Club World Cup is held every December and features seven teams from six confederations, but the competition does not ignite much interest among European fans.

Speculation is it that each club could earn £50m from taking part.
