Celebrations for Villa, tears for Bournemouth and Watford─── MORGAN PIEK 09:09 Mon, 27 Jul 2020
The 2019/20 English Premiership has finally concluded after all 20 clubs played in the final round of fixtures on Sunday night. It was tears of joy at the top, while at the bottom the tears were those of despair.
Liverpool, Manchester City and United, as well as Chelsea, all qualified for the UEFA Champions League, while at the other end of the table it was heartbreak for Bournemouth, Watford and Norwich City.
Norwich was relegated a few weeks ago, while Arsenal beat Watford 3-2 to see them drop to the English Championship. The Canaries wanted to go out with a bang, however, Pep Guardiola's City had other ideas.
Although Bournemouth beat Everton 3-1 they are relegated because Aston Villa managed to hold West Ham to a 1-1 draw.
Villa boss, Dean Smith, lauded the effort of his players in what was no doubt their most important match of the campaign.
“When Jack scores you think ‘That is it, we're safe’ but a deflection made it a little bit nervous, but we saw it out well.
“I'm immensely proud and I've said that in the dressing room. We now look like Premier League players.
“My whole family are in the living room watching together. It's been emotional because I lost my father to coronavirus. I'm sure he'll be looking down on us.”
The 2020/21 English Premiership season will kick off on 12 September.
