It was the Red Devils' heaviest defeat to Liverpool at the Theatre of Dreams, while also Mo Salah became the first Reds player to score a hat-trick at the stadium since 1936.

United boss, Solskjaer, described the defeat as worse than last season's 6-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and that it was also a dark day for the proud club.

“It is not easy to say something apart from it is the darkest day I have had leading these players. We were not good enough individually and as a team.

“The whole performance was not good enough. You can look at last season - we lost to Spurs 6-1. This is worse, miles worse.

“This is miles worse for me as a Manchester lad. I've just got to say we have to get over this as quickly as we can.”

In some of the weekends' other English Premiership results, Chelsea thumped Norwich 7-0, Manchester City beat Brighton 4-1, Watford stunned Everton 5-2, while Arsenal beat Aston Villa 3-1.
