Ellis lauds her 'African Champions' character─── MORGAN PIEK 07:43 Mon, 25 Jul 2022
The Banyana Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis, lauded her team's character and determination after winning the Women's Africa Cup of Nations for the first time.
Banyana not only won their first major international title, but earlier in the tournament they earned automatic qualification to next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Ellis said their South African fighting spirit led them to the title.
“We saw a sea of red, but I wasn't perturbed as I could see the focus of the players on their faces. They were focused," Ellis said.
“When we sang the national anthem, we couldn't hear it because of the noise, but we sang it with gusto and the players were determined.
“They showed that they wanted to win, they showed true Kasi flavour, the South African spirit, and the togetherness.”
The team is also set to earn the biggest payday yet in South African football due to bonuses promised by SAFA for winning.
Before the national team's departure for the Africa Cup of Nations, the South African Football Association promised bonuses to the tune of R20 million for winning the tournament.
