Not enough credit given to this group - Mokwena | News Article
Rhulani Mokwena - Sundowns

The Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Rhulani Mokwena, feels that his players deserve more credit after their record-extending sixth Premier Soccer League title.

On the weekend SuperSport United dropped points with a 1-1 draw to Chippa United in Gqeberha.

The win means that the Brazilians have an unassailable lead with 59 points with seven games to be played.

Having won the league with seven games to spare is the earliest any team has managed to clinch the title in the history of the Premier Soccer League.

Mokwena said that his players don’t get enough credit for the role they played in continuing their dominance in domestic football.

“There is no other competition any team competes in that lasts as long, and maybe people might not think that, but it's so difficult to have the level of consistency that this group has shown over the number of games we've played.

“Having to continuously compete without getting tired is not easy. Therei s a level of complacency that creeps in, and staying at a good competitive mental level is very difficult.

“I think not enough credit is given to this group.

“You guys know about it, and it is something that they need to be congratulated for because sometimes in South Africa. It is downplayed because maybe we are victims of our own success where people undermine the difficulties of winning a league title.

“We had to not be in a celebratory mode because of the championship, which was very difficult.”

Sundowns have now won a total of 13 league titles.

On Tuesday night at 19:30, Mamelodi Sundowns will host Cape Town City at Loftus Versfeld in their next league game.
