Gqeberha-based Premier Soccer League side Chippa United have parted ways with head coach Luc Eymael.

The decision comes just days after the 2-1 defeat at the death to Marumo Gallants at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Sunday afternoon. The controversial Eymael, a former Free State Stars mentor, has been replaced by Vusumusi Vilakazi, who becomes the club’s fifth coach of the season.

Eymael is the second coach to be axed, following Sinethemba Badela, who left after just two games. Badela’s departure paved the way for Eymael’s appointment earlier in the season.

Eymael was previously on the books of Bloemfontein Celtic as head coach in 2017, but never took charge from the dugout. He was ordered to return to Polokwane City due to a breach of contract.

During his brief stint with Chippa United, Eymael oversaw seven games with just one victory, two draws, and four defeats – a record that did little to please club owner Siviwe Mpengesi, who is notorious for his impatience with coaches.

The Eastern Cape club confirmed the decision to part ways with the Belgian tactician shortly after the loss to Marumo Gallants.

“Chippa United FC confirms a mutual separation with head coach Luc Eymael,” the club said in a statement.

“We thank him for his professionalism and wish him all the best in his future endeavours. We are pleased to welcome back Kanu Vilakazi as the new head coach.

“Familiar with our club’s values and ambitions, he is well-placed to lead us forward in the Betway Premiership. To our loyal supporters – thank you for your belief and encouragement. We promise to bounce back stronger as the Chilli Boys.”

Vilakazi’s first game in charge will be on 1 November against AmaZulu at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London – fittingly, his former club, which he left in February this year. Before returning to Chippa, Vilakazi was at the helm of NFD side Kruger United and has previously served as Chippa’s Technical Director.
