Banyana Banyana are targeting back-to-back wins as they prepare to face Angola on Saturday in their second Group A clash of the 2026 Women’s COSAFA Cup in Polokwane.

Both sides opened their campaigns on a positive note. South Africa secured a solid 2–0 victory over Malawi, while Angola impressed with a 3–1 win against Lesotho at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. With both teams level on three points, Saturday’s encounter could prove decisive in the race for a semi-final spot.

In a tightly contested tournament featuring three groups and 11 nations, only the group winners and the best-performing runner-up will progress to the last four. A win for either side would create valuable breathing room at the top of Group A.

Coach Desiree Ellis, who has opted to blood several young players in this tournament, emphasised the importance of building momentum early.

“Getting that first win was crucial. You don’t want to start on the back foot and have to chase results. Now it’s about backing that up against Angola,” said Ellis.

“If we can get another win, it puts us in a strong position heading into the final group match without unnecessary pressure.”

She also highlighted the importance of growing confidence within a relatively inexperienced squad.

“We’re working with a new group, and for many of these players it’s their first taste of international football. It’s important that we build their confidence and give as many of them as possible an opportunity to play.”

Having analysed Angola’s opening performance, Ellis is under no illusions about the challenge ahead.

“They’re a very physical side with plenty of pace going forward. We’ve worked on how to contain that, but also on improving our attacking play. We didn’t create enough chances in the first game, so that’s been a key focus in training.”

Squad rotation is also firmly on the agenda as Ellis looks to strike the right balance between performance and development.

“There’s no point bringing players here if they’re not going to get game time. We want to freshen things up, but at the same time we need to get the combinations right to ensure we still get a positive result.”

In the other Group A fixture, Lesotho and Malawi – both looking to bounce back from opening defeats – will meet earlier in the day at the same venue.

Saturday’s clash between South Africa and Angola at the Seshego Stadium will kick-off at 15:00.
