Bafana and Panama play to tense draw─── MORGAN PIEK 07:55 Sat, 28 Mar 2026
Bafana Bafana kicked off their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Panama national football team on Friday night at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
It was a typically hot, humid and energy-sapping evening on the East Coast, but the home side showed grit and character to come from behind and salvage a result in front of their supporters.
South Africa dominated large spells of the match, pinning Panama deep inside their own half and carving out a steady flow of chances. However, against the run of play, it was the visitors who struck first. Midfielder Yoel Bárcenas made the hosts pay in the 23rd minute, finishing off one of Panama’s rare attacks after Bafana failed to clear their lines under pressure.
It was a frustrating blow for the home side, who had been threatening without reward, and they had to wait until just after the interval for their breakthrough.
The ever-dangerous Oswin Appollis lit up the stadium early in the second half, firing home a brilliant equaliser in the 48th minute. His strike carried both power and a hint of unpredictability, leaving the goalkeeper rooted as the ball flew past him.
From there, it was largely one-way traffic. Bafana continued to push forward with intent, searching for a winner that ultimately proved elusive. They created several promising openings and even rattled the woodwork in the second half, but couldn’t find the decisive touch.

Head coach Hugo Broos admitted afterwards that while the finishing let them down, the overall performance was encouraging and ticked many of the right boxes.
He highlighted two key moments as the only real blemishes – the goal conceded while trying to play out from the back, and a second-half chance for Panama that struck the upright. The Belgian tactician stressed the importance of game management, noting that sometimes the safer option is the smarter one.
Broos was nevertheless full of praise for his side, believing the result didn’t fully reflect their dominance.
“I think everybody can agree that we played a good game,” said Broos.

“We dominated Panama for 90 minutes and we only made two mistakes during the game. Their goal – we should have kicked that ball into the stands, but we wanted to do things in a nice way.
“I told the players during halftime that there is nothing wrong with kicking the ball into the stands when they are under pressure. The second chance was in the second half.”
Attention now turns to the return fixture, with the squad set to travel to Cape Town for Tuesday night’s clash at the Cape Town Stadium, where Bafana will be determined to turn their dominance into a win.
