Brazil, Morocco and USA strengthen knockout hopes─── MORGAN PIEK 06:29 Sat, 20 Jun 2026
The race for places in the Round of 32 at the 2026 Football World Cup intensified on Friday with crucial matches in Groups C and D producing big results and plenty of drama across the United States.
Morocco took a giant step towards qualification after edging Scotland 1-0 in a tightly contested Group C encounter. The North Africans produced a disciplined display and made the most of their chances to secure three valuable points. The victory lifted Morocco into a strong position ahead of their final group fixture against Haiti, while Scotland now face a daunting task when they meet Brazil in their last match.
Five-time world champions Brazil also strengthened their grip on Group C with a convincing 3-0 victory over Haiti. The Brazilians were far more clinical than in their opening draw against Morocco and showed glimpses of the flair and attacking quality that have made them one of the tournament favourites. The result leaves Brazil well placed to advance to the knockout rounds, although they still have work to do against Scotland in their final group game.
In Group D, tournament hosts the United States continued their impressive start with a professional 2-0 win over Australia. The Americans followed up their opening victory over Paraguay with another assured performance to move to six points from two matches. The win puts the USA in pole position to qualify for the Round of 32 and underlines their status as one of the teams to watch on home soil.

Paraguay also boosted their qualification hopes with a hard-fought victory over Turkey. The South Americans showed resilience and determination to claim a result that keeps them firmly in contention heading into the final round of group fixtures. Turkey, meanwhile, face an uphill battle if they are to keep their World Cup dream alive.
The action continues on Saturday with four intriguing fixtures in Groups E and F.
The headline clash sees the Netherlands and Sweden square off in what could prove decisive in Group F. Sweden opened their campaign in style with a commanding 5-1 win over Tunisia, while the Dutch were held to a 2-2 draw by Japan. Victory for Sweden would all but guarantee a place in the knockout stages, while the Netherlands will be desperate to avoid a second consecutive slip-up.
Group E also promises plenty of excitement when Germany face Ivory Coast. Germany made an emphatic statement in their opening match by thrashing Curacao 7-1 and will be aiming to continue that momentum. Ivory Coast, however, arrive full of confidence after defeating Ecuador and know that another positive result could put them on the brink of qualification.
Later in the day, Ecuador take on Curacao in a match both teams simply cannot afford to lose. Ecuador suffered a narrow defeat to Ivory Coast in their opener, while Curacao were outclassed by Germany. With qualification hopes hanging in the balance, expect a fiercely contested encounter.
The final fixture of the day sees Tunisia tackle Japan in Group F. Japan earned a valuable draw against the Netherlands in their opening game and will look to build on that result. Tunisia, on the other hand, need a response after their heavy defeat to Sweden and will be determined to keep their campaign alive.
With the group stage reaching its midway point, the pressure is mounting and every point is becoming increasingly valuable. The coming days promise more twists, tension and memorable moments as the battle for a place in the Round of 32 gathers pace.
