The Belgian mentor took charge on May 2021 and oversaw one of the most successful periods in recent South African football history. Under his leadership, Bafana Bafana claimed the bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast before ending a 24-year wait to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

Broos also guided South Africa to a historic achievement at the 2026 World Cup, where Bafana reached the knockout stages for the first time. Their place in the second round was secured with a memorable 1-0 victory over South Korea in Monterrey, Mexico, thanks to Thapelo Maseko’s decisive goal.

Broos said the decision to leave was a deeply personal one, explaining that the time spent away from his family ultimately influenced his choice.

“My long absence from my family and the lonely moments in South Africa led me to make this difficult decision,” he said.

“Qualifying for the World Cup, 40 years after I played in the 1986 tournament with Belgium, brought everything full circle.”

The experienced coach added that he had always been clear about the direction he wanted to take when accepting the role, despite facing heavy criticism during the early stages of his reign.

“From the beginning I knew exactly what I wanted to achieve. With the support of my outstanding coaching staff, these have been wonderful years filled with unforgettable moments. The people I worked with were among the best in their fields, and many who started as colleagues have become lifelong friends.”

Broos also expressed his gratitude for the appreciation he had received during his time in South Africa.

“In my 38-year coaching career, I have never experienced this level of respect and gratitude. I will treasure those memories and the people I met for the rest of my life.”

SAFA president Danny Jordaan praised Broos for rebuilding the national side into one capable of competing with the continent's best.

“We have established a very, very good team, and we want to thank you for that. South Africa is now among the top 10 teams on the continent and we have a team that can compete,” Jordaan said.

He acknowledged that replacing Broos would be a significant challenge but expressed confidence that the foundation laid during his tenure would allow the team to continue progressing.

“We hope we can continue the success you've built and keep developing a team that can compete in Africa. Hugo Broos, thank you very much. You delivered for Cameroon and now you've delivered for South Africa. It was your success with Cameroon that convinced us you were the right man for the job.”

Broos is set to return to his home country of Belgium on Saturday, closing the chapter on one of the most successful coaching eras in Bafana Bafana's history.
