Anderson into 3rd round in Portugal─── MORGAN PIEK 08:39 Thu, 29 Apr 2021
The big-serving South African, Kevin Anderson, is into the third round of the Estoril Open in Portugal.
The former Wimbledon and US Open finalist, Anderson, beat Spain’s Roberto Carballés Baena in straight sets to advance to the next round.
Anderson breezed through the first set but had to convert a sixth match point for the 6-3, 7-6 win.
Anderson will next face the tough Marin Cilic of Croatia, who in his turn needed three sets to beat the Portuguese qualifier, Nino Borges, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Anderson was initially set to face Japan's Kei Nishikori, however, the former world number four had to withdraw due to injury and thus handing Carballés Baena a spot in the main draw.
On Tuesday, South Africa’s leading men’s singles player, Lloyd Harris, suffered a first-round exit with a straight-sets 6-3, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Italy's Marco Cecchinato.
Harris was using the Estoril Open to make his return to the court following a wrist injury which forced him to withdraw from the Miami Open last month.
