The defending Comrades Marathon champion, Gerda Steyn, will be running in a South African marathon for the first time in her career.
The Free Stater who placed 15th at the recent Olympic Games has been confirmed in the field for next month’s Cape Town Marathon. In Japan the Bothaville-born Steyn ran a time of 2:32:10 to finish just 4 minutes and 50 seconds off the pace.
While she has won both the Comrades and the Two Oceans, Steyn has never tackled a 42.2km race in South Africa.
In April Steyn ran a 2:25:28 Tuscan Marathon in Italy to set a new South African record.
She is tipped to do well in the Mother City, but will have strong opposition from Lucy Karami of Kenya who recently ran 2:24:24 during the Geneva Marathon.
