Serena Williams remains on course for a record 24th Grand Slam title after reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.


The seven-time champion in Melbourne beat the world number one, Simona Halep, in three sets with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win.

The tennis great said that Romanian pocket-rocket, Halep, didn’t make it easy for her on the court.

"It was a really intense match, and there were some incredible points,”

"I'm such a fighter, I just never give up... it's definitely something that’s innate. I just work so hard for every point. And I just feel like it's a miracle that I'm here, I get to do something that I enjoy.

"I love playing tennis and I love being here and I love this court, and it's really cool to be back out and playing again on this court.

"I think overall I'm hanging in there. I think overall I'm solid. I can definitely go to a new level. I have to if I want to stay in the tournament."

In other results in the women’s singles, Karolina Pliskova beat Garbine Muguruza 6-3, 6-1. Noami Osaka beat Anastasija Sevastova 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Elina Svitolina beat Madison Keyes 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.

In some of the men’s singles games, Milos Raonic beat the 4th seeded Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-1, 7-6 and Kei Niskihori beats Pablo Carreno Busta 6-7, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6.

The six-time men’s champion, Novak Djokovic, was made to work hard for his win, but his experience ultimately saw him beating Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3; Lucas Pouille beat Borna Coric 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, 7-6.
