The fairytale run of Britain’s Arthur Fery continued at Wimbledon on Wednesday as the wildcard stunned Italy’s Flavio Cobolli to book his place in the semi-finals at the All England Club.

Fery produced the biggest result of his career as he defeated the ninth-seeded Cobolli 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-0 on Centre Court to send the home crowd into a frenzy. The 23-year-old played fearless tennis from start to finish and showed remarkable composure against a player who was tipped by many to make a serious run at the title.

Fery’s reward is a semi-final against, the French Open champion, Alexander Zverev, from Germany who continued his own impressive campaign with a commanding straight-sets win over American Taylor Fritz. The second seed proved too strong as he booked his place in the final four and kept his hopes alive of winning a maiden Wimbledon crown.

The British wildcard, who entered Wimbledon ranked outside the world’s top 100, has become one of the stories of the tournament with his dream run. Against Cobolli, he absorbed the Italian’s early pressure before taking control with his aggressive baseline play and impressive serving.

After edging a tense second-set tie-break, Fery shifted gears in the third set and completely dominated Cobolli, racing through the final set without dropping a game. His confidence and calmness under pressure have quickly made him a favourite among the Wimbledon faithful.

There was also plenty of action in the women’s draw in the quarter-finals, with Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk continuing her outstanding tournament by beating Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-2. Kostyuk delivered one of her most complete performances on grass as she powered into her first Wimbledon semi-final.

Czech star Linda Nosková also reached the final four after a strong display against Belgium’s Elise Mertens. Nosková claimed a 6-3, 7-5 victory to set up an exciting semi-final clash against Kostyuk.

The results on Wednesday mean Wimbledon will see some fresh faces challenging for silverware, particularly in the women’s draw, while Fery’s remarkable journey has added a special chapter to this year’s Championships.

Attention now turns to Thursday, where the battle for a place in the final intensifies.

The women’s semi-finals will take centre stage with Kostyuk facing Nosková in a clash between two players looking to win their first Grand Slam title.

The other semi-final promises another fascinating contest as two of the tournament’s biggest performers go head-to-head with Coco Gauff facing Karolina Muchova for a place in Saturday’s final.
