Harris advances, Anderson crashes out─── MORGAN PIEK 09:16 Tue, 01 Sep 2020
The South African Kevin Anderson’s 2020 US Open at Flushing Meadows in New York was short-lived after he was knocked out of the Grand Slam during round one by the 5th seeded German, Alexander Zverev.
It was, however, not all doom-and-gloom for South Africa with Lloyd Harris advancing to the next round.
Anderson was sent packing following a 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 and 7-5 defeat to Zverev.
Following his win over Anderson, Zverev conceded that he was happy with beating a tricky opponent earlier in the Grand Slam.
“I'm actually quite happy with a first-round like that.
“Kevin is not someone you usually play in a first round. This is a fourth-round, quarter-final, semi-final match normally against him.
“I am extremely happy to be through."
The 23-year-old Harris in his turn breezed into the next round with a straight-sets victory over the Italian, Marco Cecchinato.
Harris claimed the win with a 6-4, 7-5 and 6-2 victory over Cecchinato to set up a date with the Belgian, David Goffin, in the next round.
The 10th seeded Goffin was made to work for his win by dispatching America’s Reilly Opelja with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 and 6-4 victory.
