The first set made its way to a tie break which Goffin won, before Harris won the second set, his only win for the match, as Goffin took the remaining two sets 6-1, 6-4.

Meanwhile, the men’s doubles were more bad news for South Africa with Raven Klaasen and his partner Oliver Marach of Austria being shown the door during the first round with a 6-3, 7-6 defeat at the hands of Marcus Daniell (New Zealand) and Philipp Oswald (Austria).

Over on the Women’s court, Naomi Osaka continued her bid for another US Open title when she blew past 28-year-old Camila Giorgi with a 6-1, 6-2 straight-sets win over the Italian.

The US Open round 2 action continues throughout the day and will be wrapped up by Andy Murray in action in the men’s section 2h15 am, with Serena Williams in the final round 2 women’s match at 1 am.
