The 2021 French Open at Roland Garros got underway in Paris on Sunday and there were upsets in both the men's and women's singles.

In the men's singles, the fourth-seeded Dominic Thiem of Austria was the first major casualty after being knocked out by Spain's Pablo Andújar in five sets.

Andújar came back from two sets down to beat Thiem 4-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, and 6-4 for his first-ever win over a top-five player.

Andújar said his recent win over Roger Federer gave him a lot of confidence.

“A couple of weeks ago I had another gift because I beat Roger Federer in Geneva.

“This win probably helped me today to have the belief that I could beat Dominic.

“Even if I was not in my best shape. The belief was the key to the win.”

In the women's singles, the three-time Grand Slam champion, Angelique Kerber, was sent packing with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to the Ukrainian qualifier, Anhelina Kalinina.

In some of the other men's singles matches, Stefaos Tsitsipas, of Greece beat the local player, Jeremy Chardy 7-6, 6-3, and 6-1.

The German sixth seed, Alexander Zverev, survived a scare after having to come back from two sets down to beat his compatriot, Oscar Otte, 3-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, and 6-0.

In the women's singles Victoria Azarenka beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 and Aryna Sabalenka beat Ana Konjuh 6-4, 6-3.
